Hydroelectric Power in Uganda





Uganda is a country that is working hard to be ahead in terms of technology, infrastructure and communication. Every new day a lot of investors have come in to work on various projects in the Kampala town and its outskirts. Some of these projects have been of benefit not only to Uganda but to the neighboring countries like Kenya and Tanzania, be it on the social, economic and political grounds. One of the projects that have this kind of benefit includes the hydroelectric power in Uganda.

This is a project that was pioneered by His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on 27th August 2007 in Jinja Uganda on a foundation stone worth US $ 770 Million. This is a power generation project that is expected to lower the cost of electricity in Uganda and the neighboring countries like Kenya and Tanzania. It is one of the largest power plant projects in the Sub Saharan Africa.

General advantages of the hydroelectric power in Uganda

This project has a lot of advantages that Uganda as a country stands to benefit from at large. One of them includes the supply of electricity to the entire nation which lights up the city areas and the outskirts of Kampala Uganda. There is also the creation of employment whereby many people get positions in the electric sector be it the installations and the maintenance of the electric systems within and without the city centers.

This hydroelectric power has been of much help to the transport and communication industry whereby road networks have been illuminated whereas a lot of communication networks have been powered by the electric mechanization. In a nut shell this hydroelectric power project has led to the development and establishment of many other projects in industries and companies. This is because there are a lot of other businesses like the hospitals that highly depend on the electric power at large.

Challenges encountered in the hydroelectric project of Uganda

The major challenge of hydroelectric power projects has always been the water levels. A sudden decrease in the water levels causes a lot of harm to the electricity supply to the businesses, companies and households. This is where rationing and power black outs are commonly known. Such that, there is a need to find solutions to this events like building of alternative dams and water storage systems that will collect water during the rainy seasons and be in apposition to sustain the people with electricity resource until the next rainy seasons. Nevertheless, the hydroelectric project in Uganda is one that many people stand to benefit from amid the necessary measures that were put in place to counter the water shortages.
